Human infection with avian influenza A/H7N9 virus: an assessment of clinical severity

Yu H, Cowling BJ, Feng L, Lau EH, Liao Q, Tsang TK, et al. Lancet. 2013 Jul 13;382(9887):138-45.

Background
Characterisation of the severity profile of human infections with influenza viruses of animal origin is a part of pandemic risk assessment, and an important part of the assessment of disease epidemiology. Our objective was to assess the clinical severity of human infections with avian influenza A H7N9 virus, which emerged in China in early 2013.

Comparative epidemiology of human infections with avian influenza A/H7N9 and H5N1 viruses in China: a population-based study of laboratory-confirmed cases

Cowling BJ, Jin L, Lau EH, Liao Q, Wu P, Jiang H, et al. Lancet. 2013 Jul 13;382(9887):129-37.

Background:
The novel influenza A H7N9 virus emerged recently in mainland China, whereas the influenza A H5N1 virus has infected people in China since 2003. Both infections are thought to be mainly zoonotic. We aimed to compare the epidemiological characteristics of the complete series of laboratory-confirmed cases of both viruses in mainland China so far.

Clinical Findings in 111 Cases of Influenza A (H7N9) Virus Infection

Gao HN, Lu HZ, Cao B, Du B, Shang H, Gan JH, et al. N Engl J Med. 2013 Jun 13;368(24):2277-85.

Background: During the spring of 2013, a novel avian-origin influenza A (H7N9) virus emerged and spread among humans in China. Data were lacking on the clinical characteristics of the infections caused by this virus.

Methods: Using medical charts, we collected data on 111 patients with laboratory-confirmed avian-origin influenza A (H7N9) infection through May 10, 2013.

Academics and competing interests in H1N1 influenza media reporting

Mandeville KL, O'Neill S, Brighouse A, Walker A, Yarrow K, Chan K. J Epidemiol Community Health. 2014 Mar;68(3):197-203.

Background: Concerns have been raised over competing interests (CoI) among academics during the 2009 to 2010 A/H1N1 pandemic. Media reporting can influence public anxiety and demand for pharmaceutical products. We assessed CoI of academics providing media commentary during the early stages of the pandemic.

Dramatic change in public attitudes towards vaccination during the 2009 influenza A(H1N1) pandemic in France

Leask J. Nature. 2011 May 26;473(7348):443-5.

Past waves of vaccine rejection in industrialized nations have a lot to teach us about preventing future ones, argues Julie Leask.

"By failing to prepare you are preparing to fail": lessons from the 2009 H1N1 ‘swine flu’ pandemic

Crosier A, McVey D, French J. Eur J Public Health. 2015 Feb;25(1):135-9.

Background:
Pandemic influenza has the potential to cause widespread death and destruction. Communications with the public have a vital role in the prevention of pandemic influenza by promoting the effective uptake of behaviours that can delay the spread of infection. This study explored the development and implementation of communications in the pandemic influenza outbreak of H1N1 ('swine flu') in 2009 in three European countries.
