Ebola

Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI)

Emerging infectious diseases have a potential for great harm, spreading unchecked in naïve populations, usually poorly prepared to deal with the new threat. The devastating effect of infectious diseases is most strongly felt in low income countries, where the health infrastructure and preparedness plans are at best insufficient.

Liaison with schools: disseminating ASSET to students

Wednesday, June 28, 2017 - 08:17

As a part of the ASSET project, the European Institute of Women’s Health were tasked with liaising with local schools to disseminate the activities of the ASSET project. The schools were to have received funding under the Erasmus Plus programme, which is the programme that combines all the EU’s current schemes for education, training, youth and sport in Europe.

Too long time for a new vaccine in case of an emerging infectious threat

November 9, 2016

In 2009 A(H1N1) pandemic, vaccines were ready and could be supplied only when the peak of the pandemic was already decreasing in most European countries, discouraging people from getting vaccinated. Since the disease was not as severe as it was feared in the beginning, the consequences of this delay were not that serious, even if some lives could have been saved if the vaccines were available in advance. Ebola vaccine also arrived to West Africa when the epidemic was over, while a zika vaccine is still very far away. According to Thomas Breuer, however, GSK Chief Medical Officer, in case of another flu pandemic, a better cooperation among stakeholders and new technologies could accelerate the production and supply of new vaccines.

WHO launched an app against Zika

Tuesday, March 22, 2016 - 14:55

During the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) developed an application that allowed people to share information on the spread of the contagion, which proved to be very useful to monitor the situation. Now that the Zika virus outbreak is raising concerns, would it be possible to use a similar approach? Some weeks ago, the experts of the CDC argued that developing an app to track the spread of Zika virus would not be as effective as it was with Ebola.

Filling the gaps in preparedness plans

Friday, March 4, 2016 - 08:37
A rescue exercise carried out by civil protection and Red Cross volunteers in Tabarre.

Preparedness is a key strategic element of an effective response to health threats. However, despite evident improvements in recent years, there is still large evidence of ineffective management of epidemic and pandemic events at any level, as the Ebola outbreak in West Africa recently showed.

New epidemic and pandemic phenomena: socio-economic consequences and policy issues

Tuesday, October 27, 2015 - 09:30

A conference about the socio-economic impact that epidemics and pandemics may have will be held in Milan, October 27, with the collaboration of ASSET project. How the public perceives Ebola

Monday, June 22, 2015 - 09:47

Communication is not merely a matter of passing information from one person to another. Just as important as the message itself is how the message is formulated, and who are the parties involved.  This is particularly true in case of an infectious diseases outbreak, when proper risk communication can really make the difference in terms of number of lives saved.

What does the public know about Ebola? The public's risk perceptions regarding the current Ebola outbreak in an as-yet unaffected country (paper)

Monday, June 8, 2015 - 12:07

Gesser-Edelsburg A, Shir-Raz Y, Hayek S, Sassoni-Bar Lev O. Am J Infect Control. 2015 Jul 1;43(7):669-75.

Background: The unexpected developments surrounding the Ebola virus in the United States provide yet another warning that we need to establish communication preparedness. This study examines what the Israeli public knew about Ebola after the initial stages of the outbreak in a country to which Ebola has not spread and assesses the association between knowledge versus worries and concerns about contracting Ebola.
