The 17th International Congress on Infectious Diseases (ICID) will encompass all aspects of infectious diseases with particular attention to the major challenges in the South Asia region (such as HIV, tuberculosis, pneumonia and the enteric infections typhoid fever and diarrhea) and a focus on disease prevention and vaccination. Under the umbrella of Abdus Salam Research Forum (a project of Nazarat Taleem Rabwah), the International Conference on Infectious Diseases will encompass important aspects of infectious diseases with particular attention being paid to the major challenges of the region including zoonotic diseases, malaria, tuberculosis, typhoid fever and diarrhea. Epidemics 5 will bring together international delegates for three days of intense dialogue on ideas, data, insight, models and methods in the field of infectious disease dynamics. Invited plenary speakers will lead a topical programme supplemented by around 80 contributed oral presentations and lively and stimulating poster sessions. A short course "Using genomic data to uncover the dynamics of infectious diseases" will take place on December 1, in advance of the main conference.

It aims to bring together more than 150 international scientists, health care professionals, and public health officials to discuss the assessment of the impact of epidemics of influenza and other respiratory viruses, including the incidence of infections, the clinical severity of infections, and the consequent burden of morbidity and mortality.

A conference about the socio-economic impact that epidemics and pandemics may have will be held in Milan, October 27, with the collaboration of ASSET project. The event was inspired by the recent Ebola outbreak in West Africa, which brought significant consequences on the economic and social structures of the three countries involved by the epidemic.

The World Federation of Science Journalists (WFSJ), in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), is organizing a series of two-day Training of Trainers workshops. These training workshops are part of WFSJ’s and WHO’s efforts to help build a professional network of local trainers in Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean region, specialized in training journalists on covering public health emergencies and pandemic influenza in particular.

An infectious diseases specialist in London, Geraldine O’Hara spent two months in Sierra Leone with Médecins sans Frontières last year, at the peak of the Ebola crisis. While working in an Ebola treatment centre, she was asked to share her experience on Radio 4, a national radio station in UK. We met her at the International Journalism Festival in Perugia, where she told us about how she learnt such a new job and how she realized that real-life stories might greatly improve science communication.
